At the same of One Piece, we learnt that the great Yonko that is Shanks gave up his left hand for what he believed to be the future and the new world. Luffy was saved by Shanks as he was unable to swim. Shanks also lent Luffy the straw hat as a sign for him to return it once he has grown older and is at his level. Definitely a far-fetched gamble at the time, but it’s gotten quite close.
