Are You An Enemy To Humanity? – Shingeki no Kyojin 46 (Thoughts)

Reiner and Bertholdt transforms into TitansShingeki no Kyojin 46 (Attack on Titan) was an immense chapter, here I’ll be posting some chapter thoughts on what I think has happened and how it affects the overall chapter as well as the overall manga. Obviously it’s going to be spoilers, so If you’ve not read the manga, I suggest you don’t spoil it for yourself as a lot of crazy things have happened. Otherwise carry on reading.

I’d like to mention that this is the first thoughts post on Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) so it’s going to cover both the latest 46th chapter as well as a few previous chapters read. The chapter came out awhile ago, and I just recently caught up to it, furthermore this is not a narrative of the chapters themselves, in fact they’re my thoughts as well as other people’s from the research I’ve done on this chapter. I hope to do these regularly as well as narrative on most manga and anime.

Reiner attacked by MikasaSo let’s begins, we clearly now know that Bertholdt and Reiner are obviously Titans, Bertholdt being the Colossal and Reiner being the Armored. After finding that out, Mikasa went quickly into action to cut both their heads but wasn’t successful. As they both moved away pretty quickly. At first I was surprised to hear something like this from Reiner, I thought he was joking at first, I kept on reading until seeing that they were in fact seriously, it was all set, after Mikasa’s attack, they transformed into something that was unbelievable! Even if Eren didn’t want to believe it, he found out the hard way. Reiner, the Armored Titan, obviously wanted to take Eren, which he obviously did, when Eren transformed. I really thought that it would end here, but once again Eren fought back!

Eren trips Armored TitanEren through his punches and it even made me jump and see how powerful the Armored and Eren really were. He really did learn from Annie. Eren keeps on attacking and making it as hard as he can. This makes me thing, could Eren really be as strong as Bertholdt and Reiner, no, not as strong. He’s even stronger than both of them, this is probably why they wanted him in the first place, he could help them get home. After Reiner’s head is close to being ripped off from his body from the hands of Eren’s titan, he shouts to signal help from Bertholdt.Bertholdt Colossal Titan crushes them

Berthold obviously comes to Reiner’s rescue, they are like brothers in this sense, they’ve been together for such a long time since they’re from the same village. Bertholdt smashes on both of them, crushes Eren and Reiner’s body, however Reiner’s body doesn’t get as damaged. Reiner bites Eren’s Titan nape and gets him, Bertholdt also bring Ymir, another Titan with them, Reiner leaves. with all of them.

Eren's hands cut off wakes upThe real mystery begins now, once Eren wakes up, everything is explained on what happened, they’re around the high forests, plus his hands were cut off when Reiner bit his nape, he wasn’t able to obtain his full body. Ymir, Bertholdt and Reiner are all there. He tries to initiate his Titan powers once again but Ymir tells him to hold on. She points out that they’re surrounded by a number of different titans, even a deviant titan who keeps on looking at them. This tells me that even if they’ve got the Titan power, they’re still not on top of the food chain, something that could explain why there could be a bigger threat towards everyone.

Ymir brings up the point that during the fight in the castle, it was midnight and Titan’s should not have had the ability to move, however they did. Reiner replies that she should already know that there is a different between them. After a while, we notice Reiner’s reactions to things, he seems to be very smooth and happy in nature, however in their current situation he should not be like that, he talks about being a good soldiers and a captain one day, however Ymir quickly notices that he’s not that. Bertholdt unhappily tells him that he’s not a soldier but in fact a warrior. If he’s a warrior of such titan’s, this could bring up the question to the number of warriors.

Ymir quickly deduces the situation with the right angle, she mentions that when Reiner opened the wall multiple times, he grew to hate what he did, he was a warrior who hated his job, this is why he joined the training corp and tried to change from a warrior to a soldier, unfortunately he lost track of who he was and who he is now, thus he’s head is all screwed up wrong. This unfortunately will prove to be something crucial, when they do reach their village, if they ever do. They’ll most likely be asked on whose side they are, to save humanity or to kill everyone. Both Bertholdt and Reiner’s personality are totally screwed up.

Eren will make them payEren promises them that he’ll definitely get them back for what they’ve done, he no longer care what they’ve done, he’s looking at both of them as though they’re even worse than any titan that has lived, they’ve both cost the chances for humanity and that they’re the worst enemies alive, even after telling them both his story and what had happened to his mother, they only felt sorry for him after what had happened. Ymir quickly corrects Eren, telling him that he shouldn’t make enemy of such small fry, she begins to talk to Reiner about what happened in that castle, and what the monkey they saw.

Monkey Beast TitanThe biggest mystery appears right before their eyes. We also saw this monkey titan walk and take what was a 3D maneuver gear, he was also able to talk in the same language as the humans who live there, he was obviously a more evolved version of a titan. This poses the question to how this happened, most titans don’t have much knowledge and only seem to chase after humans, however this one was more interested in human technology, he’s also a lot taller than most 15 meter titans. Personally I think that this Titan is the work of a even more powerful force which we haven’t seen yet. These titan’s appeared hundreds of years ago and it’s also impossible to tell but overtime, evolution is most likely to occur if most of them die, Titan’s like these will have to develop and have to survive. This force could be the head of all of this, which I presume Eren’s basement will explain who it may be. The Monkey Titan is a great example of evolution has occurred, and It’s most likely that this one can influence how other smaller and less developed Titans on what they should do. He seems to also be the influence on the smaller titan’s during that night, even if there was no light, the Titan’s moved as though the Monkey Titan was giving them power. Could it also be possible that the Monkey Titan is just as is, or is there a person inside the nape of this Titan, if so, who could it really be?

Ymir to protect ChristaAfter Ymir goes to mention to Eren that there is an even bigger threat to humanity, even if the Colossal Titan is huge and Armored Titan is crazy strong, they are still not at the top of the food chain. Ymir is about to mention who they are when Reiner stops her, he goes on to mention and submissively tell her that what she’s trying to protect is Christa, by mentioning that, she could have become a surprised, and it could have come out as if she doesn’t help them, they will try and hurt Christa. After this is mentioned, Eren shouts asking who the threat is, in a cold sense, Ymir answers mentioning that she doesn’t know who it may be! This clearly showing that there is an even bigger threat to what Eren wants to protect.

To end this, there is a lot that Reiner, Bertholdt and Ymir know, until they actually talk we won’t know anything about them as well as who or what this bigger force is. So what do you think about this? If you read the manga, which I’m hoping you do, you’ll have some ideas of what could be happening, be sure to comment to tell me what you think.

This was a very infuriating chapter. Instead of getting answers we were left with more questions, and all we got was back and forth bickering. It really feels like the author is trying to artificially lengthen the plot. He needs to give us answers next chapter, although I imagine it’ll shift over to the rescue team.

Good review. It was a really good read, I enjoyed it. Although I have to disagree with one thing, the part about her attacking Reiner and Bertholdt.
I don’t belive it was because Mikasa was unsuccessful in killing them, I believe it was because she held back; Mikasa is far too skilled to mess something like that up. This can be attributed to the two panels where you see Reiner’s and Bertholdt’s shocked faces presumably just before she strikes them (chapter 43, page 5), and after that she laments that she’ll never get a chance like that again. Despite the revelation of Reiner and Bertholdt being the Armored and Colossal titans respectively they were still comrades whom she had trained and fought alongside. To put it simply, her conscience got the better of her and she was unable to follow through.

I honestly lost all respect for Ymir this chapter. While Reiner and Bertholdt (well, at least Bertholdt) have very little regard for human life, I expected Ymir was different on that front. But I was wrong. She’s now chosen Christa over all of mankind. Yes, we all know she’s in love with Christa and will do anything to protect her…but does she really think Christa would willingly agree to abandoning her friends and mankind? I wouldn’t be surprised if Christa would end up seeing Ymir as an enemy and I hope she does, it would make for an interesting twist considering their newfound bff relationship. Christa may be timid, but she’s not THAT timid.

As usual, Eren was emotional. Too emotional. Granted, his inability to control his emotions is one of his charm points as he comes across as extremely determined and daring, but it’s also his biggest weakness. I had to agree with Ymir, he was being really childish. His anger was understandable, but it was still childish.

As for what Ymir was about to say to Eren before Reiner cut her off, I think it might have something to do with what Irvin told Eren. “Who do you think the real enemy is?” <- something along those lines, I forget. At first, I thought he was referring to the titan shifters, but I'm also starting to think it might have something to do with the upper echelon of the human government. Well, that's just pure and wild conjecture but I'm just putting it out there. The church that worship the walls and the upper echelon are really fishy.

Anyway, enough taking up space here. The author better provide some answers next chapter.

I knew that Mikasa was holding back, she could have easily killed both of them. We could have easily found out who the real enemy is, however Reiner stopped her so it was a disappointment there. Yeah the others might be involved too, especially Irvin or Pixie or the others, this might be pretty hard of a guess lol
No i suggest you talk as much as you want lol

    This is making sense!
My not so great theory: I think titan king wiped out memories so humans forget the technology to create bigger titans or so that they can’t go against the royals. You know, with knowledge gains power. So there’s something they are hiding in order for them to maintain at the top of the chain…Just simply to control human with fear and delusional security or watch humans develop better technology that may kill titan and obtain that as they create this wall environment?. But yeah this sounds so cliche so hopefully author will reveal awesome explanation soon. I don’t think the higher up want to eliminate humanity or else why would they create a wall in the first place?
