Shunsui vs Lille! Toshiro Dezombified – Bleach 644

Bleach 644 see’s the defeat of Pernida after her body explodes into endless pieces. Mayuri then guides Ikkaku and Yumichika to two pods brought there by Nemuri which contains the body of Toshiro and Rangiku as he tries to bring them back to their zombification. Elsewhere, they sense Mayuri’s disappearance while Shunsui faces Lille Barro.

Bleach 644 see’s Mayuri walking away from the explosions set by the defeat of Pernida. He walks away with Nemuri’s brain in his hands while his legs quickly give out. Mayuri survived the blast but it took his legs, now the situation is if this puts him in the same situation as Zaraki. However, Ikkaku and Yumichika appear.

He had thought that they’d turn tail go on ahead, however he should thank them for not getting in their fight. He tells them that around 30 steps from there, to the right are two pods which were brought in by Nemuri, pressing the red buttons will release them. In there contains both Hitsugaya and Rangiku where they were being dezombified using the machines.

Mayuri mentions that his life has been cut down quite a bit but he won’t complain as he did save his life after all. Toshiro wakes up, so does Rangiku as he thanks him for what he did. Yumichika and Ikkaku put Mayuri and Zaraki in each pods in order to bring them back from all the injuries.

Ikkaku and Yumichika lay down and thank Mayuri for saving Zaraki. They then go on ahead. All while Mayuri mentions that it seems that its Thanksgiving day since he’s been getting all types of thank yous, he finds it creepy. But it doesn’t matter as it seems that he’s finally managed to create a soul from scratch that has evolved on its own.

And thus he mentions that he’s ahead of Kisuke Urahara now. He can’t seem to imagine the frustration on his face but all the reason more to see it for himself. He goes into deep sleep as he thinks that the next time they meet, he’ll show him the difference between both of them, while also showing the difference Nemuri has made.

Shunsui and Urahara both sense Mayuri’s disappearance. They think that he’ll be okay and that they have bigger things to worry about. It seems that people in their squad have been slowly getting killed one by one while only some are left now. Rukia, Renji and Hinamori as well as Nanao, Shunsui, Shinji and Urahara are still there.

They don’t know where the enemy is coming from. Lille Barro slowly mentions that it would be scary for them to be in a situation like this since he’s watching and taking them out one after another. Shunsui notices something as he quickly mentions that it’s about time that they made a move as he turns back and quickly gets shot after Lille Barro hits him.

While he got hit, Shunsui chants out something as it seems that Lille’s shot has critically hit him hard. Even with his formation, it seems a move such as this has just done nothing but killed himself. Shunsui keeps on chanting word by word, it seems that a certain sound chants to Lille’s hear as Shunsui shows up out of nowhere.

Shunsui appears and quickly slices up Lille’s gun when he mentions that it seems that he’s been able to avoid him so quickly. Shunsui mentions that now he has gotten his weapon now, his life will be what’s next on the line. The crazy and insane battle between two awesome beasts will now begin as Bleach 644 ends here.

A fantastic chapter, indeed the next battle between Shunsui vs Lille will be something awesome. Can’t wait for next week’s Bleach 645 to see what exactly this battle will bring. It’ll truly be something spectacular to see as Shunsui will most likely be forced to fight to the point of death.

Well here are my thoughts about this chapter.

    1. I’m immensely disappointed. Only because not only didn’t Mayuri die, but now it seems Nemu won’t be dead. I really wanted Pernida to kill them. The entire fight was Pernida pressuring Mayuri. Than when Pernida killed Nemu, all but her brain was warped? Really Kubo? And for some reason, she begins to Devour her remains which leads to Mayuri winning. I know why he won. Kubo wouldn’t see Mayuri die or even lose a fight. Which is disappointing. And it seems he saved Rangiku and Toshiro. I can understand Rangiku because she wasn’t confirmed dead, but Toshiro was. Giselle killed him and turned him into a Zombie. But I’ll roll with it. The number of good guys is starting to annoy me.

    2. I know Pernida isn’t dead. That’s something I’m positive about. I believe this will happen. Pernida will reveal herself much later in the future. And I bet she’ll be in her humanoid form. I also liked that Shunsui has a new game we haven’t seen and that he’s fighting Lille. Because he’s the strongest of his group. I’m also getting a feeling Gerard will run into Shunsui’s group. I can see my Elite crush taking on a lot of opponents. I also see Pernida returning and actually coming to help Lille and Gerard. While Uryu is heading towards Ichigo’s Group to help Askin. Which in my head would make sense. Pernida, Lille, and Gerard make up the original Schutzstaffel, while Askin and Uryu make up the new members.

Mayuri walked out like a boss, Toshiro’s return was quite unexpected…Thought shinsui will fight later on when they reach yhawch but it seems he will be in battle early…overall chapter was impressive, wonder if mayuri, nemu and Kenny will fight again in this war after their disappointing battle with pernida…

I feel like those three won’t enter the fray again, or if they do, just at the very end for a power of friendship moment as they all give Ichigo their strength or something like that. Otherwise, I feel like they wouldn’t be fully healed in time to really help. I’m sure that Toshiro will get his moment though…even if he’s doomed to lose again at some point.

After a long, weird battle between mayuri and pernida, Kubo finally progresses forward with the story of bleach. I think that kyoraku will not end up fighting lille barro at all. I think someone like kisuke or toshiro or someone else will fight lille. Or maybe jugram will interfere with kyorakus battle. Like how mayuri interfered with zaraki and pernida’s fight.

That’s what I think too. I’m not sure how this new fight will turn out. Now that I have thought it through, the only outcomes I did like from Pernida and Mayuri’s fight is that Zaraki is down for a while but will be okay eventually. While Mayuri seems to be dying. Cause it seems when he was out into the capsule, Kisuke and Shunsui sensed his Reiatsu Vanishing. I also doubt Pernida is dead. The main hand of Pernida that Nemu killed when she saved Mayuri didn’t Devour her remains and got “cancer”.

Well, I’m back after that long Mayuri fight. I really couldn’t stand it and the only good part for me was Nemu’s cool DBZ powers at the end. Although, I honestly don’t expect Pernida to return, but if he does, I really hope it’s in a humanoid form since watching a giant hand fight was not amusing. I also agree that Toshiro coming back is a little..contrived. He’s a cool character and he’ll have an epic action scene, but he died fair and square. It would have been a great troll moment if he had just stayed dead. I am looking forward to Shunsui’s fight against Lille even if I do think that it should be a stomp considering that the guy’s gun is broken for at least a page. (Before the plot twists kick in) I’m ready for the action to start heating up!

I actually really loved this fight. Its one of the best in this arc in my opinion. The ending was weird for me. At least Mayuri seems to be dying and won’t be in the war. I actually believe Pernida Is Alive. I also believe she will return in her humanoid form because in chapter 599 when the Elite Guard were introduced, she was in her humanoid form and looked different than in this fight. I like Toshiro too, but I liked it better when he stayed dead. Out of all of Giselle’s zombies, Rangiku was the only one I knew wouldn’t die because Kubo has yet to explain her past surviving Aizen and his version of the Hokyokyu.

I dunno, Pernida feels like she/it/he was just a throwaway character to make Mayuri look tough. The character stayed in the hooded form when it first appeared I believe, but immediately switched tactics and forms once Mayuri caught on to how it fights. Unless, I’m just thinking of the wrong form.

I definitely wouldn’t say that Mayuri’s dying since the chamber should certainly heal him at this point since his injuries aren’t even that bad compared to Hitsugaya’s. I do agree that Toshiro staying dead made sense, especially because of how it would have trolled the fans. I would have loved to read the comments on the manga sites when his death was confirmed. The bright side is that he’s a fairly likable character so it’ll be fun to see him fight again.

What explanation are you hoping from Kubo? I kind of saw it as a closed deal at this point with Rangiku and don’t really expect her to get any more action for the series. That being said, Aizen should definitely get a big fight soon and I’m waiting for Grimmjow to wake up after being so thoroughly humiliated in his fight.

The reason why Pernida isn’t a throw away character is because she is part of the left arm. Just like Jushiro is part of the right arm, we need to a flashback to why she became one with the left arm. Pernida in this fight was very different from when she was introduced. For one thing, Pernida in 599 is taller and has a smaller head than when she transformed into a hand. Also, the why she uses her Schrift ability is different from her battle with the Royal Guard than in this fight. The Compulsory was when Pernida would whisper something, and whatever she focused on would warp. The more she whispered, the strongest The Compulsory Would get. Also, Pernida in this fight was incredibly difficult to kill because she’s using the left arms power. When Oetsu stabbed her in the head with Sayafushi, she died. Pernida in this fight got blown away by Nemu and didn’t die. Its Clear She Wasn’t Using The Left Arms Power. Plus we haven’t seen her Vollständig or other powers yet. Its so wasteful to kill her off just to make Mayuri look better.

I’m just guessing if Mayuri dies. I doubt he will, but he’s definitely not fighting anymore in this war. The end of the page were Nemu touches his face, but than he sinks into the oceans seems like he’s dying. I also wanted Toshiro to die. The fact that Giselle killed him made a huge impact to me at least. I honestly don’t see him doing anything worth while. But you never know.

I’m not sure about Rangiku. I just want to know why she didn’t die when Aizen stole her Reiryoku to fuel his Hokyokyu. But now that Mayuri is out of commission and probably dying, we won’t be able to restrain Aizen and he can break free. Grimmjow will probably be healed by Orihime or be found by someone. Its his own fault for looking stupid when he struck Askin’s Gift Ball instead of dodging it like any sane person would.

I dunno, I checked out chapter 599 and then the Hooded Enigma chapter where he first reappeared and I got to say that he looks exactly the same to me. I really don’t think that he was intended to look any different. I think the difference between Jugram and Pernida is that Pernida is literally the right hand of the Soul King, while Jugram is just Bach’s best leutenant, which is why he is the right hand. Jugram isn’t related to the Soul King. The plot twist was that Pernida owned Squad Zero’s minions by just mangling their nerves like how he beat up Zaraki. The ability just hadn’t been explained yet, but it’s the same one. Due to Pernida’s origin, he may not have needed a Vollstandig although you can argue that his true form practically was it. Either way, I feel like he was just used as fodder to make Mayuri look good since the character sadly has a huge fanbase. He’s my least favorite captain of the bunch since he’s completely evil, but people tend to love that. People want to root for the anti-hero who’s already crossed the line many times over.

I agree that Mayuri’s not fighting anymore, but I’d say that the dialogue definitely confirms that he won’t be dying anymore. The scene with Nemu was just pointless fanservice, of which I was disappointed with Kubo for doing. It didn’t have any deeper meaning. Of course, I have no proof of this, but Kubo doesn’t peg me as the kind of author who would have such a deep and subtle background effect like that. If this was Tsubasa, then maybe, but Bleach…I don’t think so. I think Toshiro’s going to end up taking out one of the big Quincy fighters, perhaps the Thor/Valkyrie inspired one. Yes, he should instantly get obliterated by any of the elite members, but he has fan demand and main character hax on his side so he should be safe for one battle, before losing again.

As for Rangiku, again I think you’re looking too hard for deeper meanings into these things. She just lived. Gin helped to keep Aizen away from her and her resilience was just enough to survive. The odds of her ever having an important twist are slim to none in my eyes. The only role Mayuri could have coming up is getting one shotted by Bach at the end, but I think it’ll take him too long to recover so hopefully Urahara doesn’t try to act like Mayuri and try to seal Aizen. I’m sure that the guy is just toying with them anyway. As for Grimmjow, yeah, he definitely looked pretty bad there. I think that he’ll be able to get up on his own and finish things though. His opponent is toast!

They actually are different. Pernida actually showed her human hand when she used The Compulsory to kill the huge divine solider Shutara summoned. Kubo hasn’t even explained why she whispers and warps your body. You can’t even see the nerves when she used the whispering. But in her fight with Mayuri you can. Also, Pernida clearly isn’t completely the left arm. Meaning that’s not her whole identify. Did you see the fight? Pernida kept saying her name isn’t left arm, her name is Pernida Parnkgjas. Even when she used her Reishi Bow to kill Mayuri’s modified Bankai and said Quincy use bows. Mayuri said its sad that the left arm is claiming to be a Quincy. But Pernida said she’s always been a Quincy and she’s annoyed that Mayuri is bad mouthing Quincy. Does that sound like Pernida is completely the left arm???? If she has her own identity as Pernida Parnkgjas, than she obviously has more to show us as a character. Plus it’s way too soon for the Elites to get defeated. I honestly don’t see how Toshiro, or Byakuya, or Grimmjow can solo any of the Elites without help. Mayuri didn’t even win this fight with Pernida, Nemu did, and now he’s out of the war for good. All his tricks ran out and Nemu had to save him. I did like that Pernida took out Zaraki and Mayuri for a long time. That doesn’t seem like pointless fodder in my eyes. If Pernida really is dead, than that’s the worst thing that’s happened in Bleach sense the Royal Guard lost off panel and Byakuya wa s forced to live due to fans. And now same with Toshiro. I see Aizen breaking out on his own now that Mayuri can’t restrain him. I also see your point about Rangiku. Her and Toshiro being back doesn’t mean anything to me.

For the first part, I just thought that he was delusional the whole time. He never really seemed that sane to begin with so even once he could talk, I just figured that Pernida was just yelling out random stuff or that he just defected to the quincies and doesn’t want to be known as a soul reaper. I still just don’t see him coming back and I think the glimpse of his human form that we got to see fighting the Royal Guard is all that we’re gonna see of the guy. If he does get a fight for the human form, then that would be neat because I really don’t want another fight where it’s a giant hand just absorbing blow after blow.I think at this point, the Captains should be strong enough to beat the Quincy elite due to their dedication and will to survive, but Bach should be able to defeat them all.

As for Pernida being fodder, it depends on what you would consider fodder. Him delaying Mayuri and beating Zaraki may immediately make him not be fodder for you while him losing to Mayuri basically confirmed him being fodder for me. To me, any character who loses in his first big fight is basically fodder. His fight with the Royal Guard wasn’t a fight so much as a hype moment and naturally, his battle with Zaraki wasn’t long enough to be a fight. It’s like any Kenshin villain aside from Shishio, glasses guy, or Shishio’s kid partner. The rest of the villains look real impressive and give the supporting characters a good fight, but then they just die off so I think of them as fodder. All of the arrancar, and even a few Espada like number 10 I would also consider to be fodder to an extent, although naturally most of the Espada are beyond that.

Ah, I see we disagree on this point though. I loved seeing the Royal Guard get completely wrecked. I had been telling people for months on dozens of sites that they were going to be humiliated by the Quincy and lose without putting up a decent fight, but everyone told me that they would look good. It’s just the Kubo formula, I knew that their hype would go to waste and either way, I couldn’t stand any of their members so I was waiting for them to lose. The worst Bleach moment in recent history for me aside from this latest fight would probably be the blood sucking scene where Bambietta was destroyed for the third time or Ichigo actually not beating Uryu. He looked terrible considering that he just got a power up.

Interesting opinion. I respect that. But the part about Pernida doesn’t make sense to me. Saying she’s just saying she’s a Quincy because she doesn’t want to be seen as a Shinigami seems simple minded. Their is evidence that Pernida is a Quincy. She has a Schrift ability The Compulsory. She even has a Vollständig. She even used Hirenkyaku to surprise Yoruichi. That’s proof enough that she’s a Quincy. You might the fine with just seeing her human form from 599, but that’s a huge waste of a good character. I’m not the type of person to hold older characters higher than new ones. The Elite Quincy have great potential to be awesome characters. Askin is already an amazing character. I see her coming back. How was he fight with Zaraki not a fight? True Zaraki got destroyed very quickly, but he still lost to her. Its like Grimmjow and Askin now. I don’t consider them fighting right now because Askin poisoned him. But later it probably will be. Of course the Captains have the potential to take out the Elites, they are superior in numbers. Not because they are stronger. You don’t like the Royal Guard? why? They are all badass. It was obvious they were going to lose. I wanted to see them fight and still do. It was them losing off panel that pissed me off. I’ll agree about Bambietta. That was weird. But I don’t care much because I never liked her character, only her abilities. Its obvious Ichigo will fight Uryu again. Those times didn’t even count as a fight. I also hate using the term fodder. Its rude and a dumb term. Let me ask you this, if we see Grimmjow and Askin fight, and Grimmjow loses, will he be considered fodder? I still think Grimmjow will show all his new powers to Askin, but only for Askin to beat him because by narrative hype by Kubo, Askin is stronger than Grimmjow.

          1. dreager1

I’ll answer this in reverse order. If Grimmjow loses to Askin in more of a prolonged fight, then hypothetically, Askin would not be fodder. That being said, Askin is already not fodder considering his impressive victory over the royal guard member in a prolonged fight and then taking out Grimmjow the way that he did. I do disagree with the notion that Kubo would have Askin win. Again, this is the Kubo formula, there is almost literally no way that Grimmjow will lose to Askin. Remember, Shonen Jump thrives on the “Rival returns even stronger” cliche so logic is thrown out the window in cases like this. Grimmjow will randomly be stronger than Askin even though I absolutely agree with you that it makes no sense from a narrative point of view. Grimmjow simply has too many fans and Kubo will be catering to them here. Now, for Pernida, if he does in fact return and shows off some cool abilities in his human form, then he’s automatically not fodder anymore because he wasn’t one and done. He can even lose his next match and still not be fodder just on the virtue of him actually returning. I’d be shocked, but happy for his fans at this turn of events and he would certainly be a real threat.

The Royal Guard had no character to me. They were literal embodiments of hype similar to Agents Ward and May from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or any old, senior citizen from Toriko. Their personality is just that they are supposed to be cool, but we never actually see any proof for this so it comes off as being a little fake. They were over the top in terms of rudeness and I really found the threat to Soi Fon to be in bad taste when they showed up. These guys continued to show me why I consider Soul Society to be evil and start to root more and more for the Arrancar. Seeing Squad Zero lose would have been fun on screen, but Kubo probably didn’t want to give away too many of the villain’s abilities or take up the time to think of powers for some of the Royal Guard members. Ichigo may fight Uryu again (I have my doubts though since Uryu may make his move against Jugram and Bach first, which could be fatal or lead to a team up) but Ichigo should have looked better in this encounter.

As for the Captains vs Elites, we naturally disagree on this. I think that the Captains win individually here as per the old characters are actually super strong trope that Kubo loves. After all, just take a look at Bleach arc 1. Ichigo was able to take down Byakuya and Zaraki, yet they are somehow strong enough to deal with Nnoitra and Zommari in Arc 2? If you just look at the power levels, it makes absolutely no sense. Likewise with any Hitsugaya fight. Tousen and Gin being so powerful was also out of nowhere, it’s just how Kubo likes to roll and I have fun rolling with it. Whether it makes sense or not, I’d say that the Captains (At least the bigger ones like Shinji and Shunsui) have surpassed the Elites. I do agree that Askin’s a decent character and I like the Valkyrie, but I can’t say that I like any of the others yet. (Not saying that I dislike them though, I just need to see more of them. I do dislike Pernida though. I liked him a lot when he first appeared and loved him as a villain Until he turned into a hand. I instantly lost all respect at that point)

Is it proof that he is a quincy? I’d just say that he has been altered or augmented by the original Quincy and Soul Reaper alliances. So many things happened off screen and let’s not forget Yamamoto’s sob story involving Bach. For all we know, Bach and Yamamoto were almost at the head of the food chain and the Soul King’s wife was a quincy or the originals were just half of each race. There are some good explanations for how Pernida can be both. Also, we saw Pernida’s human form get to fight off the Royal Guard minions. Sure, it was another short scene, but I think Kubo was just aiming for shock value when he took off the cloak. I still don’t think that he will ever appear in the series again, even counting flashbacks. (Unless the anime actually comes back, but I have my doubts at this point. It’ll probably be like 10 years before it returns)

Fair enough. Good argument. The hand reveal was off for me. That’s why I’m hoping she returns. Because I see her like Jushiro is with Mimihagi. Its just so wasteful in my opinion that’s all. Ichigo is a poor example in my opinion. He’s the main character and through the series his powers have been changing. When he took down Zaraki Unohana explained why. He made himself as weak as Ichigo, And With Younger Yhwach’s help, he surpassed the level Zaraki made himself to be. But I see your point. But I don’t believe Grimmjow Will defeat Askin. If Kubo made Toshiro die and become a zombie from Giselle, than isn’t it possible for Grimmjow to get defeated? I mean he doesn’t have to die, just lose cause I honestly don’t see how he can take down a guy that can survive a cut to the throat from a sword that has the ability to kill you depending on the cut. Plus I’ve noticed how Askin acts when he faces a certain character. He was serious with Oetsu, sarcastic with Mayuri, and incredibly goofy with Grimmjow. It seems to me he less serious he is, the more likely his opponent can’t threaten him. I like your analysis about the Royal Guard and I completely understand. Yet you root for Arrancar and not Quincy, the one spiritual race that has always fought with the evil Soul Society?? Than again, the whole Hollow thing foes play a big role in the Shinigami vs Quincy. I like Quincy more because they are actually human and I find them very relatable. Especially the only confirmed surviving Sternritter like Liltotto, Giselle, and Bazz-B. I still see Pernida coming back. I’m not giving up. Same with the Royal Guard. I actually really want to see Nelliel find Grimmjow and see both of them take on Askin. That seems like an evenly matched fight to me. I know I’m the only Bleach fan that was more hyped to see Nelliel return than Grimmjow. Rukia and Yukio was an added bonus. I rather see what her Resurrection Gamuza can do that what Grimmjow has to offer.
